At Wellington Hospital in London we have access to a new state of the art intraoperative MRI.

Intraoperative MRI can be used to visualise the progress of operations for brain tumours. It is particularly useful for non enhancing low grade tumours located in eloquent areas of the brain. These are tumours with no discreet margins from the rest of the brain. They are also tumours which may contain functioning tissue that needs to be recognised and preserved during the operation.

The presence of an MRI in an operating theatre allows achieving updated scans midway an operation, without having to suture the surgical wound and take the patient out of theatre. The intraoperative scan is used to update the preoperative image guidance.

The combination conventional brain navigation (including tractography), integrated intraoperative ultrasound, real-time intraoperative neurophysiology, and intraoperative MRI provides the highest standard of intraoperative navigation available anywhere in the world today.
